More evidence that Google rules don’t apply if you are big player.

I love noodles, so I decided I want to get the real Japanese Ramen Bowls, or Noodle Bowls, so I head on over to the goog and do a search for Ramen Bowl.

I notice on the paid ads on the right hand side Trip Advisor showing a totally unrelated ad. Yes that’s right, I am searching for a Ramen Bowl, and I am getting an ad telling me I can read Hotel reviews and save. See the ad titled ” Fairly large bowls of ramen”

I did another search for noodle bowl, and once again, Trip Advisor is showing up. See ” Map of Szechuan Noodle Bowl ”

I wonder how long I would last trying a run a PPC Campaign like this?

My guess is they would kick my ass from here to Tokyo within 5 minutes of going live. No doubt with a warning about showing ads that are not relevant or provide a “poor user experience.” Yet here are Trip Advisor shamelessly abusing the system without a problem.

Internet Marketers continue to get the shaft, but it seems the big players don’t have to play by the same rules. So while internet marketers get banned, Brands just keep doing what they want, no Google slap for them!

Not that Google favour Brands though

For some time now I’ve noticed that many of my websites had rather slow load times. I kind of figured it was a hosting problem, so for two months I’ve been grinning and bearing it.

Well the other day it was getting ridiculous; so I contacted HostGator‘s tech support. Like usual, they got back to me inside the hour having checked into the problem. The said things looked fine on their end, and proved it with some tests from InternetSupervision.com.

So I went to WordPress and deactivated all my plugins.

Boom. Site was faster.

I then methodically started re-activating them.

Pretty quick I discovered SEOPressor – one of my favorite plugins! – was the culprit.

Checkout these screenshots from before and after the SEOPressor de-activation. The first shot is before…

And now, for after I de-activated SEOPressor:

We’re talking about something like a 600% difference in load times, with the plugin activated!!! Ouch!

A couple of those servers took nearly 30 seconds to load. Brutal.

My recommendation?

For time being, use SEOPressor when you’re writing a post, but de-activate the plugin when you logout. It doesn’t perform anything useful except when you’re editing posts anyhow. It’s still a great plugin, and I’ve shown the tech support guys these screenshots, so hopefully Daniel Tan will come back with an update shortly.

One of the downsides of running WordPress can be a large amount of comment spam. Now there are tools out there to combat comment spam, and until a month or so ago, I was happy enough with askimet, but lately it seems to be putting more and more normal comments into spam, so I decided to make a switch and try something else.

I have one site that, due to the niche it is in does get a large amount of daily comment spam. The site ranks well for chosen keywords in the search engines, and this means I get more than my fair share of ” nice post, I now want to bookmark you in my browser and come back soon ” comments. So with this seemed like the perfecting testing ground for the growmap anti spambot plugin or G.A.S.P.

I have had the G.A.S.P running for over a week now, and so far I have to say I am mucho impressed. I have had absolutely zero WordPress spam comments since the installation. That’s pretty damn impressive.

Like most things that do a good job it’s actually quite a simple idea. It works by including a simple checkbox in my comment form that auto-commenting and spamming software is unable to read. ( See Image Below )

Stopping The Spambots

The result for me is more time for more productive things, and that is always good.

As a result of the positive trial, I have now installed the plugin right here on the emarketing life internet marketing blog so if you want to see it in action, just leave a comment.

Once again I was asked the following question last week regards making money online.

Dave Can I Make Money Online ?

I have been trying to make money online for over a year now but I don’t feel I am any closer today, I have tried many different things, but none seem to work what do I need to change

I think I get asked this quesiton, or something VERY similar most weeks.

My Advice?…First You Need To Be Like “The Wolf.” …
You Need A Plan, let me explain,
Winston Wolf is Harvey Keitel’s character In Quentin Tarantino’s Pulp Fiction.

How Would The Wolf Do Internet Marketing ?

He is what’s known as a professional fixer… When he knocks on the door at Jimmie’s house, he introduces himself “I’m Winston Wolf. I solve problems.”
In this particular case he arrives to help Jules and Vincent dispose of a car and their informant Marvin’s body after Vincent accidentally shot him in the face while they were driving.

So Why Do I Say Be Like “The Wolf?”

When you have a problem, you need to find a solution. To do that you need to look at the current situation and decide on the best way forward. If you have multiple websites, would you be better just to focus on one ? If you have good traffic but it isn’t converting, why not?

The Wolf knows how to look at the current problems in front of him, and plan a way forward to get the desired result.

It’s the same for you. You need to know what you want to achieve.
In Pulp Fiction ” The Wolfs ” objective is to get the car and the body removed from Jimmy’s house before Jimmie’s wife, Bonnie, gets back from work. Everything he does is to ensure that goal is realised.
So what is your goal ? Is it to make extra income on top of your current job ? is it to quit your job and become a full time internet marketer ? No matter what it is, you need to make a plan to make it happen. And you then need to act on it.

While you can’t call Winston Wolf to solve your problems, we do have a professional fixer. Keyword Bullseye teaches you how to create a plan and a way of working that can get your making sales online. Know how to do things the right way, make plan for what you want to accomplish, and you will be surprised how much easier things become. Trying many different things is not the right way to do this. You first need to master one way. The hardest thing online is making your first dollar. Learn how to make at least one dollar, and you can build from there. Winston Wolf would be a great Internet marketer, his brilliant, lucid thinking under pressure gets him results and that is what separates him from the rest. Keyword Bullseye will help separate you from the rest and make you more like ” The Wolf”. Click the link below to find out more

I love Dilbert, as Scott Adams so often has his thumb on what’s happening in business, and is able to boil that down to a comic strip or two.

Every now and then, he writes about internet marketing related things, so I thought I’d post these two strips, as they are SEO related.

Given all that has been going on lately in the search engine world, with the Panda / Farmer update and all the rest of it, it often feels like Google hasn’t left business owners much recourse but to use tactics that they’ve told us they don’t like. However, if you check any of the biggest keywords, you’ll find all the top sites using so-called “black hat” link building methods. It’s a typical Catch 22 situation, courtesy of the Goog.

Scott Adams isn’t really taking that angle here – more siding with the Goog I guess, but it still makes for a funny strip.

The other side of this whole equation of course is that Google has burned so many marketers so many times, their trust level has plummeted drastically amongst most of the internet marketers I talk to.

Google has become a byword for “corporate control” of the internet; and with Android, Gmail, Docs and all their plethora of other services, people are left wondering just how much does Google know about me?

At the end of the day, after a nice stress-relieving verbal Google bashing, I’d only be half surprised to see a message pop up on my Mac telling me to shut my pie hole.

Who knows? Maybe it will come to that…

The year is 2007. The place, Ivybridge, near Plymouth, Devon, England. It is the start of November and Yuri, a 40 something Czech truck driver is on his way to pick up a consignment of flat screen televisions. Yuri is not from around these parts, it’s unfamiliar territory so he’s using his Sat Nav to get him to his location.

Yuri is driving along the main A379 road, when his Sat Nav tells him to take one the lanes leading off the A379. The Sat Nav is telling the way he should go, its a small lane, but Yuri trusts the navigation tool and makes the turn…

As one eye witness said

You wouldn’t drive any sort of lorry up there – it’s got a 90 degree turn.
The lorry was stopped in its tracks by an overhead pipe but could not back up.

When he tried to reverse the wheels just skidded – he just couldn’t get any grip.

And Then we are left with the following scenario…..

Sometimes It's Better To Go With Your Gut

Poor Yuri spent 3 days sleeping in the cab of his truck, all because he trusted the tool he was using in his job, rather than thinking for himself.

Best Internet Marketing Tools

There a numerous Internet marketing tools available, and I use some of them on a daily basis, but the best Internet marketing tool to use is this one in the image below……

Still The Best IM Tool There Is !

Internet Marketing Tools can help you save time, but you should also question the information they provide and look deeper, otherwise you could be making costly and time consuming mistakes. Contrary to what some Internet guru types would have you believe, Internet marketing is not as easy as pushing a button and getting the answers and results you want. If Internet marketing tools were really that good, the guys who develop them would not be trying to sell them to you for $97, No… they would be pushing the magic button and pocketing the cash all while travelling the world in their own private jets!.

Don’t be like Yuri, don’t be a sat nav marketer, blindly following the data path, set by your Internet marketing tool of choice. I have ranked keywords that keyword tools have told me are hard, and by the same token, I have had problems ranking for terms they told me were easy. There is more to it than just picking a keyword on the say so of a software tool.

The secret to not ending up like poor Yuri and his truck, is to have some idea of where you should be going, a simple old style map would have told Yuri he was going to go down the wrong road, and the same thing applies for you with Internet marketing and trying to make money online, you need get a clear idea of what your destination should be. That way you can use the information the software tells you, and decide if you should proceed that way or not. You don’t want to end up so far down the lane you can’t back out .
